Want to work for Mirriam? If so, you’re hired! No application or references needed. The only requirement is a passion for kids. Here are some ways Mirriam’s workers have contributed.
5K Shuffle Around the Square - Graceland University student nurses organized the first ever 5K walk to benefit HealthEd Connect. Walkers, runners, babies in strollers, and elderly citizens braved a chilly October morning to walk from the Graceland Independence Campus to the Independence Square and back. Over $3,000 was raised thanks to the students’ efforts!
Donations in lieu of presents – One long-time supporter of the kids in Africa decided to make contributions to HealthEd Connect this year instead of sending presents to law practice partners. Think of all the pencils and books that can be purchased with that donation!
Wedding favors – Catherine England Afarian shared the joy of her wedding with a circle of friends much larger than her guest list. After the big event she sent her donation and wrote a note to say, “Just thought I'd share a link to a picture that shows the HealthEd Connect flyer on display at our wedding. We got lots of comments from guests supporting our decision to donate rather than provide traditional wedding favors. “
Matching Funds – Several people work for generous employers who match their employees’ donation. Mirriam receives double the contribution that way. Be sure to see if your employer has a matching program.
Regular donations – Mirriam has several devoted workers who make regular monthly donations. No glitzy program, no fanfare – just regular salt-of-the-earth dependable donations. She’s especially grateful for this kind of on-going commitment!
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) – A team of 6 Graceland University SIFE students gave 3 weeks of their time to travel to Zambia in January 2010 to donate – themselves! They taught math in the classroom, organized Soccer Clubs, taught financial literacy both for grandmother caregivers and for the kids, and distributed a ton of hugs and bushels of smiles!
WorldService Corps – Two volunteers, Ashley Guinan and Rachael Zimmerman, spent several weeks in Zambia in Summer ’09 helping to develop the foundation for HealthEd Connect in that area. In addition to their other responsibilities, they trained local community leaders in interviewing skills, conducted community needs assessments, tabulated results, and elicited the feedback needed for the establishment of HealthEd Connect. They also got to meet Boss Mirriam in person!
Uniroyal Soccer Balls – The kids in Zambia were thrilled with a Uniroyal in-kind gift – 10 genuine soccer balls! Being avid ‘football’ players but previously having had only balls made from rags and plastic sacks, they were ecstatic with the real thing! Community members have now stepped up to form after school Soccer Clubs.
